Washa Beverage Label Precheck

Screen distilled spirits label artwork against its COLA application details before filing, and see where they agree, where they differ, and what still needs a person to check.

Overview

Pre-submission screening for compliance professionals

Washa Beverage Label Precheck is web-based screening software. It compares label artwork with the details of the label application before a Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) application is filed.

It is designed to mark anything it cannot confirm as Needs Review for a person to check, rather than pass it. Your qualified reviewer remains responsible for every filing decision.

Who it is for

  • COLA filing services
  • Beverage compliance consultants
  • Import compliance specialists preparing distilled spirits label applications
How it works

From artwork to a screening report

  1. Provide artwork and application details

The front label image, an optional back label image, and the label's application details.

  2. The software compares them

Text is read from the artwork and compared with each application field and the health warning.

  3. Review the screening report

An overall result and, for each field, the application value, what was read, and why. Anything uncertain goes to a person.

What it checks

  • Brand name, class/type, alcohol content, net contents, producer or bottler name and address, and country of origin for imports, each compared with the application details
  • The government health warning statement: exact wording, "GOVERNMENT WARNING:" in capital letters, and whether the heading appears bold and the body does not, where the image allows it to be measured
  • Front and optional back label images
Limitations

What it does not check

  • Type size, legibility and contrast judgments, and placement
  • Statements not in the application details, such as age, coloring, sulfite or other claims
  • Formula requirements and state requirements
  • Wine and malt beverage rules
Results

Fail, Needs Review or Pass

Every result also lists what was not checked.

Needs Review is common, especially with photographs, low-resolution or decorative artwork and some font styles. Clean, flat digital artwork gives the most complete results.

Fail

The label was read and shows something different from the application details.

Needs Review

Something could not be confirmed automatically. A person should check it.

Pass

The items that were checked match the application details.

Screens

Real output on synthetic sample labels

These screens come from the actual software, run on synthetic sample labels with fictitious brands.

Washa result screen showing Fail: the alcohol content on the label reads 40% while the application says 45%.
A discrepancy found: the label shows 40%, the application says 45%.
Washa result screen showing Needs Review for an image that could not be read; nothing is confirmed.
An unreadable image is marked Needs Review; nothing is confirmed.
Washa result screen showing Pass for each checked field on clean, flat digital artwork.
Pass on clean, flat digital artwork. Real labels and photographs often need review.

How it is provided today

Washa Beverage Label Precheck is a web application hosted on Microsoft Azure, with sign-in through Microsoft Entra ID work or school accounts.

Access is currently by assisted onboarding: a guided pilot in which Washa runs your labels through the software and reviews the results with you. Self-service access and purchase are not yet available.

Privacy

In the web application, label images and application details are processed in memory to produce the result and are not stored or logged. Text is read by optical character recognition running within the application, and label images are not sent to external AI services.

Material you share for a guided pilot is handled under the pilot's written data-handling terms. Read the privacy policy.

Important. Washa Beverage Label Precheck is a pre-submission screening aid for professionals. It is not legal advice, a compliance certification or a determination by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), and it does not guarantee label approval. Automated reading can miss a discrepancy or report one that is not there; your qualified reviewer remains responsible for every filing decision. Washa is not affiliated with or endorsed by TTB or any government agency.
